Ebenezer Akinsanmiro

Midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro will be part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Pisa SC head coach Alberto Gilardino has confirmed. The 21-year-old will join the Super Eagles’ training camp after Pisa’s Serie A clash with Lecce on Friday, December 12.

Gilardino told FC Inter1908, “Akinsanmiro? After Lecce, he’ll miss several matches,” indicating that the young midfielder will temporarily leave Pisa to represent his country in the continental tournament.

Akinsanmiro was included last week in Nigeria’s 54-man provisional list for AFCON 2025, marking his first-ever call-up to the senior national team. The midfielder has drawn attention this season with impressive performances for Pisa, where he is currently on loan from Serie A giants Inter Milan.

The former Remo Stars player has quickly established himself as one of the standout performers in the Italian club’s midfield, catching the eye of both club and national team coaches. His inclusion in the Super Eagles’ squad underscores Nigeria’s focus on integrating young talents ahead of the continental championship.

The Super Eagles are set to open camp for AFCON on Monday, December 15, ahead of their group stage matches. With Akinsanmiro joining after the Lecce game, Nigeria’s technical team will have the opportunity to assess his readiness and integrate him into the squad strategy.

Football analysts say Akinsanmiro’s maiden call-up reflects the national team’s commitment to blending youth and experience, adding depth to the midfield ahead of a competitive AFCON campaign. Observers note that his performances in Serie A this season have shown tactical maturity, ball control, and versatility, qualities that could prove vital for Nigeria in the tournament.

The midfielder’s temporary absence from Pisa comes at a crucial point in the Serie A season, but Gilardino acknowledged the importance of international duty, expressing confidence in Akinsanmiro’s ability to contribute to both club and country.

Nigeria’s final squad for AFCON 2025 is expected to be trimmed from the provisional list in the days leading up to the tournament, with Akinsanmiro now in strong contention to make the cut. Fans will be keenly watching the young midfielder as he prepares for his debut on Africa’s biggest football stage.

The 2025 AFCON promises to be a significant milestone in Akinsanmiro’s career, potentially setting the stage for further breakthroughs at both international and club levels.
