Super Eagles

Former Nigeria and Strasbourg winger Simon Zenke has publicly praised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle for handing international debuts to Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu.

The two defenders made their first appearances during Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly victory over Iran in Antalya on Friday.

According to Zenke, the successful integration of the new players proves that Nigeria now possesses a strong and settled pool of centre-backs.

Both Fernandez and Nwaiwu entered the match in the second half, replacing Semi Ajayi and Igoh Ogbu respectively.

They quickly impressed spectators with their composure and reading of the game, especially as Iran pushed hard for an equaliser following a goal by Mehdi Taremi.

Speaking in an interview relayed by Footy Africa, Zenke noted that their strong performances were particularly significant given the recent retirement of veteran defender William Troost-Ekong last December.

“I am happy with what I saw in the game against Iran, and the win was very good,” the 37-year-old said.

“I was particularly impressed with the two players, Fernandez and Nwaiwu, who came on as substitutes,” he added.

Nwaiwu was originally drafted into the squad as a late replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey. Meanwhile, Fernandez earned his maiden call-up after delivering consistently impressive performances for Rangers this season.

Zenke highlighted how these successful debuts have positively impacted the team’s defensive depth moving forward.

“The reality now is that Nigeria has a variety of options in central defence, and that is a very positive development. The coach now has a real selection dilemma in that area,” he explained.

The former winger expressed his satisfaction with the growing competition within the squad.

“I have always believed that the more quality players you have, the better,” Zenke noted. “Nigeria now boasts a strong pool of centre-backs to choose from at any time.”

Concluding his thoughts on the team’s defensive future, he offered a bit of sympathy for the tough choices the head coach will have to make.

“I do not envy the coach,” he said. “It is a selection problem, but a good one. That department looks settled for many years to come,” he added.

Both Fernandez and Nwaiwu will be hoping to secure more playing time when the Super Eagles face Jordan on Tuesday for their second friendly match of the current international window.
