El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has condemned an attempted arrest by security operatives at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, describing the action as illegal and a violation of his rights.

The incident occurred Thursday when El-Rufai returned from Cairo, Egypt, and agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly seized his international passport. The attempted arrest prompted swift legal action threats from his counsel, Ubong Esop Akpan, who demanded the immediate return of the passport and a formal apology from the authorities.

In a statement, El-Rufai’s lawyer called for the “immediate and unconditional cessation of all unlawful efforts to detain El-Rufai, the immediate return of his stolen passport, and a formal apology for this egregious infringement on his dignity and rights.”

Reacting on his X account, El-Rufai emphasized that the country must respect the rule of law, saying, “My lawyers have issued a statement that condemns the illegal attempt to arrest me today at the Abuja airport upon my arrival from Cairo. Our country must outgrow executive overreach and deliberate disregard for the rule of law.”

The former governor’s response underscores growing concerns about executive overreach and legal propriety in Nigeria’s enforcement of anti-corruption measures. The matter is expected to escalate as legal proceedings and demands for accountability move forward.
