Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez has expressed immense pride after making his long awaited debut for the Super Eagles during Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly victory over Iran in Antalya on Friday.
The 24 year old centre back, who was born in London and is the youngest of eight siblings, made his first international appearance after coming on at half time to replace Semi Ajayi.
He delivered a highly composed performance to help Nigeria secure the win, especially as the Iranian side pressed hard for an equaliser in the second half.
Following the match, the defender described the milestone as a dream realized.

“It’s my home nation, it’s where my family is from, it’s where I am from,” Fernandez told Rangers TV. “It’s something that I have always wanted to happen,” he said.
Fernandez transferred to Rangers from Peterborough United last summer and has recently been linked with moves to prominent European clubs like Club Brugge and Sporting Lisbon.
Despite the challenges of his career journey, the defender maintained that he never doubted his eventual call up to the Nigerian national team to wear the green and white jersey.
“People probably thought I couldn’t have got there,” he noted. “And I always had faith in myself that I would get there,” he added.
Reflecting on the personal significance of the achievement, Fernandez expressed his deep appreciation for the moment and the joy it brought to his loved ones.
“I know my family are proud,” Fernandez stated. “I’m grateful for the opportunity, and I’m glad it happened,” he added.
