President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a special fund dedicated to supporting members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, including those wounded in active service and the families of fallen heroes.
The President made the declaration on Saturday as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, describing the initiative as both a personal commitment and a national duty to those who risk their lives for the country.
According to him, he has directed the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately set up a dedicated account that will serve as the funding base for the initiative. The fund, he said, is designed to complement existing welfare and insurance schemes available to military personnel, while specifically targeting those who have suffered life-altering injuries and the dependants of officers who died in the line of duty.

Tinubu disclosed that, as a demonstration of his commitment, all his salaries since assuming office as President will be paid into the account as seed funding. He noted that the gesture is aimed at setting the tone for collective national responsibility and encouraging broader participation.
“This fund will directly support those who have lost their limbs, and the widows, widowers, and children of those who laid down their lives in service to our dear country,” the President stated.
He called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the initiative once operational details are made public. The President emphasized that the success of the fund would depend on collective support across all levels of society.
Tinubu further stressed the need for the nation to continually recognize and honour the sacrifices of its armed forces, noting that their courage and dedication remain central to Nigeria’s peace and security.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families,” he said.
Describing the initiative as a moral obligation rather than an act of charity, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the welfare of military personnel and their families remains a top priority.
“This is not charity. It is duty. And we will fulfil it,” he added.
