Maduka Okoye

Akor Adams and Maduka Okoye have created a welcome selection headache for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle following their impressive performances during Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly victory over Iran on Friday.

The duo stepped up significantly to fill the void left by the absence of key players Victor Osimhen and Stanley Nwabali ahead of the upcoming AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.

Adams, who has mostly played a supporting role since his national team debut in October 2025, was tasked with leading the attack against the Iranian side.

The Sevilla forward successfully seized the opportunity by scoring a goal and delivering a standout overall display.

“His movement, strength and pressing demonstrated that he can carry the attacking burden independently,” the sports report noted, adding that he proved he is “not merely complement the team’s main striker.”

Meanwhile, Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made a strong return to the national squad after a period away.

He showcased composure and excellent distribution from the back, which helped the Nigerian team maintain control while under pressure. Although he conceded a late goal to Mehdi Taremi, Okoye produced crucial saves in the final minutes to secure the win.

These performances come at a critical time for the squad. Nwabali, who served as Nigeria’s primary goalkeeper during the last two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, was excluded from the current roster after departing Chippa United earlier this year without securing a new club.

“Chelle has made clear his preference for players in active club football,” the publication stated.

The report further explained that Nwabali’s situation “has cost him both match fitness and his place in the national team.”

With Okoye’s highly successful return to the pitch, the competition to reclaim the number one shirt has become considerably more difficult for Nwabali.

The match also highlighted the successful integration of two new debutants. Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu both delivered composed and disciplined performances to help the team stay organized in defense.

Coach Chelle, who just secured his 14th victory since taking charge of the Super Eagles, now prepares to face Jordan in another friendly match on Tuesday with a deeper and highly competitive squad.
