President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday met with the Tax Ombudsman, Dr. John Nwabueze, alongside Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Finance Minister Wale Edun at the State House, in a move observers say underscores the administration’s renewed focus on tax reform and citizen-friendly governance.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa, centered on strengthening Nigeria’s tax administration, improving transparency, and addressing long-standing taxpayer concerns. Sources said discussions included strategies to make the tax system more efficient, responsive, and aligned with national development priorities.
Dr. Nwabueze highlighted efforts by the Office of the Tax Ombudsman to resolve taxpayer complaints and streamline dispute resolution. “The engagement with Mr. President and his team was very constructive. We discussed practical steps to ensure grievances are addressed promptly and that government policies reach citizens effectively,” he said.

Chief of Staff Gbajabiamila framed the meeting as part of the administration’s broader agenda to promote accountability and efficient service delivery. “The President remains committed to supporting institutions that enhance governance and foster economic growth,” he said.
Finance Minister Wale Edun emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, noting that a robust tax system is vital for sustaining economic stability and financing critical development projects across the country.
Analysts say the engagement signals a deliberate push to restore public confidence in the tax system by tackling compliance gaps, delayed dispute resolution, and perceptions of opacity. The meeting also aligns with ongoing fiscal reforms designed to expand Nigeria’s tax base, improve digital collection methods, and ensure transparency in public finance management.
Observers note that better coordination between the President’s office, the Ministry of Finance, and the Tax Ombudsman could increase domestic revenue, strengthen investor confidence, and enhance overall economic governance.
The talks come at a time when the federal government is intensifying efforts to modernize fiscal systems and leverage technology to make revenue collection more efficient, transparent, and citizen-centered.
