The National Sports Commission (NSC) has called on stakeholders in Nigerian basketball to put the interest of the game above personal ambitions as the Nigeria Basketball Federation prepares for its elections scheduled for later this year.
The appeal comes amid preparations for the federation’s electoral process, which is expected to hold in line with guidelines issued by the FIBA, the global governing body for basketball.
Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, made the call while addressing concerns over possible tensions ahead of the elections, urging members of the basketball community to focus on unity and the development of the sport.
According to Olopade, the coming months represent a critical period for basketball in Nigeria, noting that the credibility of the electoral process will determine the future of the game and the country’s standing in international competitions.
“This is a crucial moment for basketball in Nigeria. We must all put the game first. The future of our athletes, our national teams, and our global reputation depends on collective responsibility and adherence to due process,” he said.

He stressed that FIBA has already provided a clear framework for the elections and advised stakeholders to respect the established statutes and internal regulations guiding the federation.
Olopade added that dialogue, cooperation, and strict compliance with the rules are necessary to ensure a transparent and widely accepted outcome.
FIBA, in its latest communication to Nigerian basketball authorities, announced that the tenure of the current NBBF board has been extended until October 15, 2026, while elections into a new board must be conducted between September 15 and October 15, 2026.
The international body explained that the timeline was adjusted to allow the completion of the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup before the electoral process begins, in order to avoid disruptions to national team activities.
The NSC boss reiterated that the Commission is committed to supporting a stable basketball structure in Nigeria and will continue to align its actions with international best practices to protect the country’s participation in global tournaments.
Basketball in Nigeria has experienced administrative disputes in the past, leading to suspensions and threats of sanctions from FIBA, making the upcoming election a sensitive issue for the sport.
Olopade expressed confidence that with cooperation from all parties, Nigeria can conduct a peaceful and credible election that will strengthen the federation and promote the growth of basketball across the country.
