Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is scheduled to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, following a recent confrontation at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, where operatives attempted to detain him and seized his international passport.
El-Rufai’s counsel, Ubong Esop Akpan, confirmed the planned appearance and reiterated demands for the immediate return of his client’s passport and cessation of what he described as unlawful attempts to detain the former governor. Akpan has also threatened legal action against those involved in the earlier airport incident.
The former governor, who was returning from Cairo, Egypt, described the attempted arrest on social media as illegal and a reflection of a wider problem of executive overreach in the country. “Our country must outgrow executive overreach and deliberate disregard for the rule of law,” El-Rufai stated on his X account, echoing his lawyers’ condemnation of the action.
The EFCC has not publicly detailed the specific reasons for El-Rufai’s summons. However, sources indicate that the appearance is part of ongoing investigations linked to financial and administrative matters during his tenure as governor.

Political analysts have noted that the case is likely to attract significant public attention, given El-Rufai’s high-profile status and his criticisms of perceived violations of legal norms.
El-Rufai’s legal team has assured the public that the former governor will fully cooperate with EFCC authorities while also seeking redress for any procedural or constitutional breaches.
Monday’s appearance is expected to clarify the allegations and determine the next steps in the ongoing engagement between El-Rufai and the anti-graft agency.
