The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Thursday as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) effectively recognized the National Caretaker Committee led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The endorsement became evident during INEC’s first quarterly consultative meeting with political party leaders, where Abdulrahman Mohammed, chairman of the Wike-aligned caretaker group, and Acting National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu were allowed to participate.

INEC’s protocol normally limits attendance at these high-level briefings to the national chairmen and secretaries of parties officially recognized by the commission. By granting Mohammed and Anyanwu access, INEC has signaled its recognition of the Wike faction as the legitimate administrative leadership of the PDP.

Observers say the development follows a recent legal victory for the Wike-aligned group. A Federal High Court in Ibadan had issued an order compelling INEC to acknowledge the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee as the authentic leadership of the opposition party. The court ruling nullified claims by rival factions and provided the legal basis for INEC’s current stance.

The recognition is seen as a significant boost for the Wike faction, which has been embroiled in a protracted dispute over party leadership. Analysts note that the backing of INEC gives the group administrative legitimacy and strengthens its position ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

Earlier on Thursday, Politics Nigeria reported that representatives of the Wike faction were scheduled for a critical meeting with INEC officials to discuss the party’s status and the implementation of recent judicial pronouncements. The meeting is expected to further consolidate the group’s authority within the party structure.

Political commentators suggest that INEC’s decision could have far-reaching implications for PDP’s internal dynamics, including the conduct of primaries, candidate nominations, and coordination of party activities at state and local levels. Rival factions may need to seek judicial remedies or reconcile with the recognized committee to maintain influence within the party.

The Wike-led caretaker committee has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to restoring cohesion, improving internal governance, and preparing the PDP for national and state elections. With INEC’s effective recognition, the faction now has a stronger mandate to implement reforms and guide the party toward stability.
