Bendel Insurance strengthened their resurgence in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Saturday, handing Enyimba FC a 2-0 defeat at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
The victory leaves Enyimba stranded in 12th place with 31 points from 25 matches, highlighting a season plagued by poor form and off-field turmoil. The People’s Elephant have now won just once in their last six games, struggling to meet the lofty expectations that accompanied their campaign.
Insurance dominated from the start, creating early chances through Musa Sudes and Udom Emmanuel before Oweilayefa Alex opened the scoring in the 26th minute, a reward for the hosts’ sustained pressure.
Enyimba showed brief signs of revival early in the second half, forcing a smart save from goalkeeper Emmanuel Ofori in the 56th minute, but failed to convert opportunities. The contest was sealed in the 79th minute when 16-year-old debutant Efe Ubiomo scored his first goal, doubling Bendel Insurance’s lead and announcing his arrival on the NPFL stage.

The win marks a continued turnaround for Bendel Insurance under coach Kennedy Boboye, moving the team to sixth place with 37 points and keeping hopes alive for a continental competition slot.
For Enyimba, the defeat adds to a turbulent season marked by frequent coaching changes and ongoing investigations into alleged financial mismanagement. Newly appointed Cameroonian Emmanuel Deutsch, the club’s fourth head coach in two years, faces a challenging task to stabilize the nine-time champions’ campaign.
