Leaders of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Nyesom Wike have inaugurated a national convention organising committee ahead of the party’s scheduled convention on March 29 and 30 in Abuja.

The committee was inaugurated on Saturday night by acting national chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, who charged members to set aside internal divisions and focus on rebuilding the party.

Mohammed acknowledged that the PDP had faced prolonged legal and internal crises over the past year but said the party had emerged stronger. He described the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal as a turning point, calling it a “no victor, no vanquished” decision that should encourage reconciliation among members.

He urged the committee to organise a convention anchored on legality, inclusiveness and credibility, stressing the need for diligence and impartiality in discharging their responsibilities.

Chairman of the convention committee and former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, described the upcoming convention as a defining moment for the PDP. He said the appellate court’s affirmation of the National Caretaker Working Committee represents both a legal and moral reset for the party.

Ikpeazu noted that the exercise must go beyond routine political activity, emphasizing that it should restore confidence, strengthen internal democracy and unify party members. According to him, reconciliation remains critical to the PDP’s survival and future success.

Also speaking, acting national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, saying members who left due to internal disagreements would return ahead of the 2027 elections.

He added that the convention would produce a new National Working Committee capable of repositioning the party for upcoming electoral contests, noting that the process had been observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The convention is expected to shape the leadership and direction of the PDP faction as it seeks to reassert its influence in Nigeria’s political landscape.
