Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Abidjan on Sunday to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of President Alassane Ouattara, who begins his fourth term in office on Monday, December 8, 2025.
Senator Shettima was received at the airport by Côte d’Ivoire’s Prime Minister, Robert Mambe; the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, Mrs. Item Akpama; and other senior officials. He will join other African leaders and international dignitaries at the ceremony, which will be held at the Presidential Palace.
Ouattara secured re-election on October 25, 2025, continuing his leadership of the West African nation. Nigeria has long maintained a commitment to supporting constitutional governance and democratic processes across the region, and VP Shettima’s attendance underscores the country’s dedication to these principles.

The two nations maintain close diplomatic, economic, and security ties, cooperating through regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union. Partnerships cover multiple areas, including security collaboration, trade, development, combating human trafficking, agriculture, and the digital economy. A sizeable Nigerian community in Côte d’Ivoire further strengthens business and social connections between the two countries.
VP Shettima’s visit is also expected to reaffirm Nigeria’s support for democracy and constitutional leadership transitions in West Africa. Following the inauguration ceremony, he will return to Abuja.
