President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity, declaring that criminal threats will not derail efforts to support vulnerable Nigerians or undermine national development.
Speaking on Sunday in Lagos while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, Tinubu said security topped discussions during his recent state visit to the United Kingdom and remains central to his government’s agenda.
He disclosed ongoing efforts to strengthen international partnerships for modern security equipment and intelligence support, including recent talks with Emmanuel Macron. According to the President, these collaborations are part of a broader strategy to defeat criminal elements and ensure lasting peace.
“Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity,” Tinubu said, stressing that his administration is intensifying both local and global engagements to confront the challenge. He added that discussions abroad focused heavily on acquiring advanced security capabilities to bolster Nigeria’s response.

The President also warned that global developments, particularly tensions in the Middle East, could worsen inflation and strain household incomes. He urged state governors to introduce measures that would cushion the economic impact, especially rising energy and transportation costs.
Tinubu called on subnational leaders to remain focused on delivering policies that directly improve citizens’ welfare, while working closely with the Federal Government to combat what he described as the “tyranny” of criminal groups. He maintained that protecting lives and livelihoods remains a top priority.
He further assured Nigerians of enhanced protection through the deployment of modern technology, particularly in vulnerable regions such as Borno State, where security challenges persist.
In response, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq commended the President’s leadership and described his recent UK visit as a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations and attracting investment.
AbdulRazaq said governors are united in addressing insecurity and revealed that discussions on establishing state police are progressing. He noted that the forum is working with security agencies to develop a legislative framework, which will be presented to the National Assembly.
The meeting, attended by governors from across the federation, highlighted growing consensus between federal and state authorities on the need for coordinated action against insecurity, as well as sustained economic support for citizens facing rising costs.
Tinubu concluded by urging unity among leaders, expressing confidence that collective efforts would overcome the nation’s security and economic challenges.
