President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a historic address at a state banquet hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, highlighting the enduring friendship, shared history, and strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Speaking as the first Nigerian leader to address a gathering at the nearly millennium-old royal residence, Tinubu expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended to him, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, and the Nigerian delegation. He described the occasion as a historic moment, emphasizing the deep institutional and cultural connections between the two nations.

“The Magna Carta of 1215 laid the foundations for the rule of law and parliamentary democracy, ideals that continue to influence governance globally,” Tinubu said. He noted that Nigeria’s legal system, parliamentary structures, and civil service have drawn on British models, adapting them to national needs, demonstrating the long-standing institutional ties between Abuja and London.

Tinubu also highlighted the contributions of the Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom, describing it as “one of the most dynamic communities worldwide.” He cited the vital roles of Nigerian doctors and nurses in the National Health Service, and lauded Nigerian talents in sports, including footballers Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, rugby star Maro Itoje, and boxer Anthony Joshua.

The president underscored the importance of collaboration on regional security challenges, particularly terrorism in West Africa, noting that the partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential. He referenced his upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer
