He reminded the country that the annual Remembrance Day on January 15 serves as a national moment of reflection on the human cost of peace.

“A grateful nation must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve,” he said. “This solemn occasion reminds us of the cost of peace and the importance of unity as we celebrate our heroes.”

The President commended soldiers operating in multiple conflict zones ranging from counterterrorism operations to anti-banditry and maritime security describing their service as a “source of national pride.”

“Our armed forces have demonstrated exceptional courage across various theatres of operation,” he said. “Their efforts have restored normalcy to many communities and strengthened national stability. Under my administration, collaboration among security agencies has recorded significant gains.

Tens of thousands of insurgents have surrendered, key terrorist leaders have been neutralised, and many captives have been freed.”

Tinubu also highlighted improved security within Nigeria’s maritime domain. He credited new platforms and enhanced capabilities acquired for the Army, Navy, and Air Force with boosting operations against piracy, oil theft, and illegal fishing.

New Security Programme for Ungoverned Spaces

The President disclosed that the Ministry of Defence was developing a new national security initiative aimed at reclaiming ungoverned spaces by tapping into the expertise of retired military personnel. He said the programme would help restore government presence, reopen economic activities, and prevent the resurgence of violence in previously unstable communities.

“This initiative is designed to strengthen security and revitalise local economies,” Tinubu said. “It will also prevent the emergence of violence in communities that have experienced insecurity.”

He also announced the introduction of a new digital engagement platform called Thank a Soldier, which allows Nigerians at home and abroad to send appreciation messages to serving troops through a QR code system.

“This year marks a new chapter in our remembrance activities,” he said. “This initiative encourages digital engagement and promotes youth participation in national service. As we launch the 2026 emblem, I urge all Nigerians to wear it with pride. It symbolises sacrifice, honour, and national gratitude.”

Call for Unity and Rejection of Divisive Rhetoric

The President urged Nigerians to embrace peace, tolerance, and respect, warning against political and ethnic divisions. He described Nigeria’s diversity as a national strength that must be protected.

“I call on every Nigerian to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace respect, tolerance, and understanding,” he said. “Our diversity is a national asset that must be cherished. As Commander-in-Chief, I remain committed to equipping and motivating our military because security remains a central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Focus on Welfare

Tinubu also outlined ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare of military personnel, including improved allowances, upgraded barracks, expanded healthcare, and pension verification reforms using BVN and NIN systems.

“We will continue to improve the welfare of our troops and other security agencies,” he said. “My administration has enhanced allowances, upgraded barracks, strengthened healthcare, and expanded health maintenance.”

Major Donations Announced

At the event, Tinubu donated ₦200 million to the emblem appeal fund. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who was decorated with the emblem by the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Mrs. Grace Morenike Henry, contributed ₦100 million. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, donated ₦20 million.

Others in attendance included Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, ministers, service chiefs, heads of intelligence agencies, and senior military officers.

The 2026 emblem launch marks the beginning of nationwide fundraising efforts to support families of fallen soldiers, veterans, and wounded military personnel.
