President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s election to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium, calling it a strong endorsement of the nation’s renewed maritime leadership and commitment to global shipping standards.

Nigeria secured re-election into Category C of the IMO Council during the organisation’s General Assembly in London on Friday, November 28, marking the country’s return after a 14-year absence.

Reacting to the development, President Tinubu said the outcome reflects the confidence of the international community in Nigeria’s dedication to maritime safety, security, environmental protection, and adherence to global regulations. He commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, along with staff of the ministry, NIMASA, and the diplomatic team for their coordinated efforts and professionalism during the campaign.

The President noted that the Council mandate supports his administration’s plan to grow the blue economy, enhance maritime infrastructure, intensify anti-piracy measures, and position Nigeria as a leading regional shipping hub.

He pledged Nigeria’s readiness to work with global partners to promote safer seas, cleaner oceans, and more efficient maritime transport, while championing cooperation and fairness in maritime governance.

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to member states for their confidence, assuring them that Nigeria will contribute actively to advancing international maritime objectives.
