President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday paid glowing tribute to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader defined by integrity, discipline and quiet strength, as Nigeria gathered for the launch of Buhari’s biography.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu said Buhari’s true measure lay not in the offices he held but in the values that endured after his time in power, particularly his belief that public office is a trust rather than a personal reward. He extended the nation’s condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and the family, assuring them of Nigeria’s prayers and gratitude.
Tinubu, who described Buhari as a brother, friend and political partner, recalled their shared political journey that culminated in the historic 2015 election, when an opposition coalition unseated an incumbent president for the first time in Nigeria’s history. He said the alliance built in 2014 reshaped the country’s political landscape and has since evolved into what he described as Africa’s fastest-growing political party.
“The contest ends when the oath begins,” Tinubu said, noting that Buhari understood the difference between political competition and the responsibility of governance. He urged Nigerians to keep politics honourable and governance focused on results, saying cooperation across differences was a sign of wisdom, not weakness.

According to the President, the biography serves as an honest account of Buhari’s life and leadership, acknowledging both achievements and shortcomings, and offering lessons rather than slogans for future leaders. He praised the author for preserving facts and testimonies without reducing a complex life to simplistic narratives.
Tinubu outlined what he described as the enduring pillars of Buhari’s legacy, beginning with humility. He said Buhari chose simplicity over extravagance and lived modestly even while wielding power, believing that a leader must first discipline himself before reforming a system.
On security, Tinubu said Buhari recognised safety as the foundation of citizenship and prosperity, investing in personnel, platforms and reforms within the armed forces that would endure beyond daily headlines. He added that Buhari sought to protect both the Nigerian state and its citizens.
The President also highlighted Buhari’s emphasis on long-term vision through investments in infrastructure, including roads, railways, bridges and airports, as well as his focus on maintenance and sustainability. He said Buhari’s approach reflected an understanding that development required patience and continuity.
On social justice, Tinubu said Buhari believed in targeted social investments to ensure that the poor and vulnerable were not excluded from governance, arguing that the state had a duty to protect its most disadvantaged citizens.
While acknowledging that Buhari often faced criticism, Tinubu said even many of his opponents conceded his personal honesty and consistency in service to the nation. He described Buhari as a leader who loved Nigeria “decision after decision,” remaining faithful to the oath of office.
Tinubu said the responsibility of sustaining Buhari’s legacy now rests with those who follow, including his own administration. He urged Nigerians to remember that the country is greater than any tribe, religion or political party, and that nation-building is the work of both leaders and citizens.
He concluded by praying for Allah’s mercy for the late former president and comfort for his family, expressing hope that the biography would reach classrooms, libraries and young Nigerians seeking inspiration.
“Though he is no longer with us,” Tinubu said, “his impact endures, and we will honour it by delivering results with discipline, compassion and resolve.”
