President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his planned trips to South Africa and Angola to attend the G20 and AU-EU summits, citing urgent security concerns over the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and a bandit attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
The President directed the deployment of additional military and police personnel to Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara, following requests from the state governor. Security agencies have also been instructed to pursue the attackers relentlessly.
Originally scheduled to leave Abuja on Wednesday, President Tinubu opted to delay his departure after reviewing reports on recent security breaches. He awaits detailed updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi to offer condolences and assess the situation, as well as briefings from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the Eruku attack.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safe return of the 24 schoolgirls kidnapped in Kebbi and urged all security agencies to exhaust every effort in rescuing the victims.
The President’s decision underscores growing concerns about escalating insecurity in parts of northern and central Nigeria, where banditry and attacks on civilians continue to pose serious threats. Security experts say the move reflects the administration’s prioritization of domestic stability over international engagements.
