President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of four ambassadors-designate to strategic diplomatic missions, marking the first batch of postings from the 68 nominees confirmed by the Senate in December.

According to official information, the President confirmed Ambassador Ayodele Oke as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to France, while Colonel Lateef Are has been posted as ambassador-designate to the United States of America. The appointments place experienced envoys in two of Nigeria’s most influential bilateral relationships.

Also approved is the posting of Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, a former Nigerian ambassador to South Korea, as the high commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom. His return to diplomatic service is expected to strengthen engagement with the UK, a long-standing partner in trade, security and education.

In addition, Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, a former governor of Kebbi State, has been named ambassador-designate to Turkey. His posting comes ahead of President Tinubu’s scheduled state visit to Turkey next week, a trip expected to deepen cooperation in areas including defence, trade and infrastructure development.

In a memo directed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Tinubu instructed the ministry to formally notify the governments of France, the United States, the United Kingdom and Turkey of the nominations. The notification is to be carried out in line with established diplomatic procedures, including the request for agrément from the host countries.

The postings signal the gradual activation of Nigeria’s diplomatic corps following the confirmation of ambassadors-designate late last year. Observers say the selection of the four countries reflects the administration’s focus on revitalising key international partnerships while preparing the ground for broader diplomatic engagements.

Further postings from the remaining list of confirmed ambassadors-designate are expected in the coming weeks as the government continues efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy and strengthen its presence on the global stage.
