Two students and their teacher from Lagos State Model Junior College Igbonla narrowly escaped death following a road traffic accident in Lagos, authorities have confirmed.
The incident, which occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Onipanu area, involved two vehicles reportedly travelling at high speed along a major expressway.
Details of the crash were made public by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the accident involved a Honda Accord and a Suzuki Alto.
He explained that the collision occurred when one of the vehicles lost control and veered off its lane into the opposite carriageway, resulting in a head-on impact that caused significant damage to both cars.
“The Honda Accord had a single occupant, while the Suzuki Alto conveyed three occupants, comprising a teacher and two students,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Despite the severity of the crash, emergency responders confirmed that there were no fatalities, and all occupants survived without life-threatening injuries.
The students involved in the accident were identified as Animashaun Ridwan and Ogunbamowo Michael, both in Junior Secondary School 2.
Officials said the students complained of head and eye discomfort shortly after the incident.
Emergency personnel at the scene promptly attended to them, administering first aid and stabilising their condition before releasing them to their parents.
The teacher, identified simply as Mr Joseph, who teaches Basic Technology at the school, was also involved in the accident but did not sustain serious injuries.
LASEMA noted that its response team arrived promptly at the scene, ensuring the safe evacuation of all victims and preventing further hazards on the road.
The agency added that the damaged Suzuki Alto was towed off the expressway to restore normal traffic flow and reduce the risk of secondary accidents.
Both vehicles involved in the crash have since been handed over to the police for further investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
While preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed may have contributed to the collision, authorities say a full investigation is underway.
Oke-Osanyintolu used the opportunity to reiterate the importance of road safety and responsible driving among motorists.
He warned that reckless driving, particularly speeding, remains one of the leading causes of road accidents in the state and poses a serious threat to lives and property.
“Motorists must exercise extreme caution, obey speed limits, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations at all times,” he said.
He further urged drivers to prioritise safety over haste, noting that many accidents could be avoided if road users complied with established traffic laws.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the need for increased awareness on road safety, especially in densely populated urban areas like Lagos, where traffic congestion and high-speed driving often intersect.
Authorities have continued to stress that sustained public enlightenment, coupled with strict enforcement of traffic rules, is essential in reducing the frequency of road accidents.
Residents and commuters were also advised to remain vigilant and report reckless driving or road hazards to appropriate authorities to help prevent similar occurrences.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to rapid emergency response and public safety across the state.
