Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has strongly condemned the assault of women and girls during the Alue-Do festival in Ozoro, Delta State, describing the incident as inhumane and unacceptable.

In a statement on Sunday, the First Lady expressed outrage over viral footage showing young girls subjected to physical and sexual assault during the cultural celebration in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area.

She stressed that while Nigeria is proud of its rich cultural diversity, no tradition or custom should ever be used to justify the violation of the dignity, rights, or freedom of women and girls.

“There is no justification for such degrading and barbaric acts. Our cultural heritage must never come at the expense of the safety and dignity of our women and children,” she stated.

Mrs Tinubu commended the swift response of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that arrests had already been made in connection with the incident. She called on security agencies and relevant authorities to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice without delay.

She also urged victims of the attack to seek immediate medical and psychological support, assuring them of her thoughts and prayers during what she described as a painful and traumatic period.

The First Lady reiterated the need for communities to uphold values that protect and respect women, warning against harmful practices disguised as cultural traditions.

The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage across the country, has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women and girls, as well as greater accountability for perpetrators of gender-based violence.

Mrs Tinubu concluded by praying for the healing, peace, and strength of the victims, while reaffirming her commitment to advocating for the safety and dignity of women nationwide.
