The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man identified as Muhammed Abubakar over his alleged involvement in a failed kidnapping attempt in Edo State.

The suspect, said to be from Kwara State, was apprehended in a community near Ologbo in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area after security operatives foiled the attempted abduction.

Confirming the incident, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the suspect was arrested following a swift response by security agents to a distress call from residents.

According to her, the suspect and his accomplices, who were reportedly armed, stormed a residential building in the early hours of the day, attempting to abduct occupants of the house.

The police spokesperson explained that the incident occurred at about 6:00 a.m., when the attackers arrived at the location and began firing sporadically to create panic among residents and force compliance.

She said the gang attempted to break into the building by forcing open the iron door, but their efforts were thwarted after vigilant members of the community alerted security agencies.

“Upon receiving the distress call, security operatives were immediately deployed to the scene,” Ikoedem stated.

She added that the suspects fled into a nearby bush upon sighting the police, abandoning their operation.

However, during a subsequent combing of the surrounding area, operatives succeeded in apprehending Muhammed Abubakar, while other members of the gang escaped.

The arrested suspect has since been handed over to the Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Unit of the Command for further investigation and prosecution.

Police authorities indicated that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing accomplices.

In a significant development, the suspect reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime during preliminary interrogation.

According to police sources, Abubakar admitted that he is a herder from Kwara State who had come to Edo State with the intent to engage in kidnapping activities.

The Command noted that the confession would form part of the evidence to be used in prosecuting the suspect.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, has directed all Divisional Police Officers and tactical commanders to remain vigilant and intensify efforts to combat criminal activities across the state.

He emphasized the need for sustained surveillance, rapid response to distress calls, and proactive policing strategies to prevent crime and ensure the safety of residents.

Security experts have continued to stress the importance of community participation in crime prevention, noting that timely information from residents often plays a critical role in foiling criminal operations.

The Edo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring the public that it would continue to strengthen its operational capacity to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Residents were also encouraged to remain alert and report suspicious movements or individuals to security agencies without delay.

The latest arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the rising threat of kidnapping in parts of the country, with authorities intensifying crackdowns on criminal networks and strengthening inter-agency collaboration.

Police authorities assured that the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations, while the search for his accomplices continues.
