Nigeria kicked off its campaign at the 4th Africa Youth Games in Luanda, Angola, with a promising start, recording early victories and securing qualification spots across multiple events. The excitement around Team Nigeria was further heightened by the arrival of the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, who touched down in Luanda to motivate and inspire the athletes.

On Day One, the Nigerian table tennis teams delivered impressive performances. In the boys’ singles, Nigeria defeated Ethiopia 3–0, securing a spot in the Round of 32. The girls’ singles team also excelled, finishing at the top of Group 4 ahead of Madagascar and Ghana, advancing comfortably to the Round of 32.

Looking ahead to Day Two, Nigeria’s badminton team is set to compete in the semifinals, with high hopes of reaching the finals. Observers are optimistic that the early momentum will carry through other events, enhancing Team Nigeria’s overall performance at the Games.

Upon his arrival, Hon. Olopade addressed athletes and officials, emphasizing the NSC’s commitment to nurturing future sports talents. He stressed the importance of building a sustainable talent pipeline that will consistently produce world-class athletes capable of excelling at continental and global competitions.

“The focus is not just on today or tomorrow, but on long-term development,” Olopade said. “We want to ensure that every athlete has the support, guidance, and resources needed to reach their full potential and represent Nigeria with pride.”
