Nigeria has been placed on heightened public health alert following reports of multiple disease outbreaks across several states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced.

In a statement on Monday, the agency confirmed ongoing responses to outbreaks including cholera, Lassa fever, meningitis and diphtheria, urging state governments and health facilities to strengthen surveillance and early response measures.

The NCDC said while containment efforts are underway, factors such as poor sanitation, overcrowding and low immunisation coverage continue to fuel the spread of infectious diseases. It warned that delayed reporting could worsen outcomes, particularly in vulnerable communities.

According to the agency, rapid response teams have been deployed to affected areas, while laboratories have been placed on alert to ensure timely testing and confirmation of suspected cases. Public health education campaigns are also being intensified.

Director-General of the NCDC stressed the importance of community cooperation, advising Nigerians to observe hygiene practices, seek medical attention early and adhere to vaccination schedules.

The Federal Ministry of Health is coordinating with state governments, development partners and healthcare workers to ensure adequate supplies of medicines, vaccines and protective equipment.

Health experts say Nigeria’s disease burden underscores the need for sustained investment in primary healthcare, water and sanitation infrastructure, and disease surveillance systems.

The NCDC assured the public that there is no cause for panic, but urged vigilance, noting that collective action remains key to preventing widespread transmission.
