NFF Sunday Ndidi

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Super Eagles have expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of Mr Sunday Ndidi, father of Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, who died in an automobile accident.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NFF described the loss as devastating, extending heartfelt condolences to the Leicester City midfielder, his immediate family and the entire Ndidi household. The federation said Nigerian football was united in grief with its captain at what it called a “painful and trying moment.”

“The Nigeria Football Federation is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Sunday Ndidi, father of our captain, Wilfred Ndidi. We commiserate with Wilfred and his family, and we pray for God’s comfort and strength as they mourn,” the statement read.

The Super Eagles also conveyed their sympathies, noting that the team stood firmly behind Ndidi. Several players and officials took to social media to share messages of support, describing the late Mr Ndidi as a pillar of strength whose influence was evident in his son’s humility and professionalism on and off the pitch.

Details of the accident were not immediately disclosed, but family sources confirmed that Mr Ndidi died following injuries sustained in the crash. The news has since drawn an outpouring of tributes from football stakeholders, fans and former internationals across Nigeria and beyond.

Wilfred Ndidi, 28, is one of Nigeria’s most accomplished footballers of his generation. A mainstay in the national team for nearly a decade, he has earned over 60 caps and has featured prominently at the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He currently captains the Super Eagles and is widely respected for his leadership and commitment.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, in a separate condolence message, described Mr Ndidi’s death as a personal loss to the Nigerian football family, noting that the federation would continue to support the Super Eagles captain during the period of mourning.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Wilfred Ndidi. Losing a parent is never easy, and we share in his pain. May the soul of Mr Sunday Ndidi rest in perfect peace,” Gusau said.

As condolences continue to pour in, the NFF urged the football community and the general public to respect the privacy of the Ndidi family as funeral arrangements are made. The federation also prayed for eternal rest for the deceased and fortitude for the family to bear the loss.
