Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday declared that the formal entry of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, into the All Progressives Congress (APC) affirms the ruling party as a truly national platform open to all Nigerians committed to unity, peace and inclusive development.

Speaking at the grand reception of Governor Mutfwang and his supporters into the APC at the Jos Polo Field, Shettima said the political realignment underscored the APC’s identity as the destination for all believers in a united and progressive future. He described Plateau’s entry as a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s shared destiny and the party’s commitment to national cohesion.

“Plateau is a reminder that what powers nations is unity — unity rooted not in sameness but in shared purpose,” the Vice President said, assuring that Governor Mutfwang would enjoy full standing and recognition within the APC. He added that good governance remains an asset to any political movement genuinely committed to national progress.

Shettima recalled Plateau State’s historic contributions to Nigeria’s unity, paying tribute to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and other prominent figures from the state who played key roles during critical moments in the nation’s history. According to him, Plateau’s legacy of reconciliation and sacrifice remains central to Nigeria’s survival and collective existence.

The Vice President commended Governor Mutfwang’s leadership, describing him as a unifying figure whose administration has begun repositioning Plateau State from conflict toward peace and development. He praised the governor’s initiatives in peacebuilding, renewable energy deployment for primary healthcare centres, agricultural expansion, transport infrastructure renewal, and people-focused budgets prioritising education, healthcare and youth empowerment.

Earlier, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described Mutfwang’s defection as significant, noting that it completes APC’s political presence in the North Central zone. He applauded APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, for what he termed the successful delivery of Plateau State to the ruling party. Akpabio assured the governor of victory in 2027 and said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has remained a leader for all Nigerians, irrespective of faith.

The Senate President also prayed for the repose of souls lost in past crises in Plateau State, pledging that the National Assembly would appropriate funds to support the return and resettlement of displaced persons in Plateau and other conflict-affected parts of the country.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, described the event as historic, noting that Plateau was the last state in the North Central region to join the APC. He said the development signified the zone’s complete alignment with the ruling party and urged Governor Mutfwang to embrace reconciliation and provide inclusive leadership as the party’s leader in the state.

APC National Chairman, Prof. Yilwatda, said Governor Mutfwang’s entry was massive, disclosing that several politicians from other parties had continued to join the APC. He expressed confidence that Plateau State would vote overwhelmingly for President Tinubu in 2027 and assured that social justice, equity and sustainable peace would be prioritised in the state.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, described Mutfwang as one of the party’s brightest leaders, assuring that Plateau State would witness greater prosperity under the APC. Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, also said the North Central region was now fully APC and would strongly support President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In his remarks, Governor Mutfwang said Plateau State had chosen a path that would reposition it for development and enable it to fully support President Tinubu in 2027. He praised the President’s commitment to national renewal and unity, while acknowledging Vice President Shettima’s role in encouraging his decision to join the APC.
