former President Goodluck Jonathan, President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday received former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa in Abuja following Jonathan’s return from Guinea-Bissau, where he had been on an election monitoring mission.

Jonathan, who travelled to the West African country as part of a regional team overseeing its electoral process, arrived in Abuja amid heightened concerns over his safety after a sudden military takeover rattled the nation earlier in the week.

It was gathered that President Tinubu was immediately briefed on Jonathan’s arrival and promptly invited him for a closed-door meeting to discuss the political situation in Guinea-Bissau and broader regional stability efforts.

Speaking briefly to State House correspondents after the meeting, Jonathan said he was “grateful to be back home” and commended the Nigerian government and ECOWAS for their swift diplomatic engagement during the period of uncertainty.

“There were concerns, naturally, given the unexpected developments,” he said. “But democracy in West Africa remains a shared responsibility, and Nigeria continues to play a vital leadership role.”

Though details of the meeting were not disclosed, presidency officials hinted that the discussions also touched on Nigeria’s ongoing commitments to restoring constitutional order in countries recently affected by coups across the region.

President Tinubu, who currently plays an active role within ECOWAS on matters of regional security and governance, was said to have reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering support for democratic values and the safety of its envoys participating in international missions.

Saturday’s meeting is seen as an important signal of Nigeria’s continued diplomatic engagement in stabilizing the West African sub-region.

The former Nigerian leader returned to his Abuja residence after the meeting as ECOWAS continues to monitor unfolding developments in Guinea-Bissau.
