General Christopher Gwabin Musa

Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Retired), has promised swift and decisive measures to strengthen national security, emphasizing the need for unity between the armed forces, other security agencies, and citizens.

In a statement following his swearing-in, Musa underscored that restoring safety across the country is his immediate priority.

“You’re back to a very familiar terrain, and Nigerians are expecting. The expectation is huge,” Musa said. He added that the Defence Ministry will work to ensure synergy between all branches of the armed forces and other security institutions, while actively engaging citizens in efforts to secure the nation.

“Security is everybody’s responsibility. It is that synergy that we need to build on, and I can assure you that within the shortest possible time, Nigerians will see results,” he said.

Musa expressed gratitude for public support, noting the encouragement he has received from Nigerians. “I want to use this medium to appreciate all Nigerians. Nigerians have shown me love, and I will guarantee them that I am going to work whatever it takes to ensure that Nigeria is secured,” he stated.

The new Defence Minister also revealed his conversation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting the directives given by the Commander-in-Chief. “Yes, I just met Mr. President, and he reiterated his mind on the aspect that we must make sure that Nigeria is secured.

Nigerians should go back and sleep with their eyes closed. Go back to their farms. Schools open without being molested. Everyone being carried together to make sure that Nigeria continues to grow in line with the renewed program,” Musa said.

Security experts note that the minister’s priorities align closely with the administration’s broader agenda of restoring law and order across conflict-affected regions, including the North-East, North-West, and other vulnerable areas.

Analysts have emphasized that Musa’s familiarity with the terrain, combined with his experience as former Chief of Defence Staff, positions him to coordinate a more integrated and effective response to insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges.

Musa’s remarks also reinforced the government’s message that security is a collective effort requiring active cooperation between citizens and security agencies. He stressed that public trust and participation are essential for achieving sustainable peace and protecting communities from violence.

Observers say the minister is expected to prioritize intelligence driven operations, joint force deployments, and stronger collaboration with regional and international partners, as part of a comprehensive approach to tackling persistent security threats.

As General Musa assumes office, Nigerians are watching closely, hoping that his assurances translate into concrete improvements in safety and stability. The minister’s pledge to act “whatever it takes” underscores the administration’s commitment to ending insecurity and restoring confidence across the country, allowing citizens to resume normal daily life without fear.

With these declarations, General Musa sets the tone for his tenure: immediate action, collaborative strategies, and a results-driven approach aimed at securing Nigeria and safeguarding its people.
