Gabriel Suswam

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political shift in the state’s landscape.

Suswam announced his defection on Tuesday in Makurdi, citing deep internal divisions and unresolved leadership crises within the PDP as reasons for his decision. He said the party had strayed from its founding ideals and could no longer offer a credible platform for effective governance.

“The PDP I once believed in has lost its direction. After wide consultations, I have decided to join the APC in the interest of Benue State and national stability,” Suswam said.

The former governor was received by senior APC leaders, who described his defection as a major boost to the party’s strength in the North-Central region. They said his political experience and grassroots influence would contribute significantly to the party’s electoral fortunes.

Suswam, who served two terms as governor and later as senator, stated that his move was not driven by personal ambition but by the need to align with a party he believes has the capacity to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

The Benue PDP leadership expressed disappointment over the defection, accusing Suswam of abandoning the party during a critical period. However, they maintained that the party remained strong and focused on rebuilding ahead of future elections.

Political analysts noted that Suswam’s defection could trigger further realignments in Benue politics, particularly as parties position themselves for upcoming electoral contests.

The development adds to a growing list of high-profile defections reshaping Nigeria’s political terrain, raising questions about party loyalty and ideological consistency.
