Femi Falana

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has called on the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice to urgently prosecute 10 soldiers and about 400 alleged sponsors of terrorism reportedly identified by security agencies.

Falana made the call while reacting to previous disclosures by military authorities that several individuals and some members of the armed forces were implicated in the financing and support of terrorist activities in the country. He said failure to prosecute those named has continued to undermine Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts and the rule of law.

According to Falana, the military had publicly announced that 10 serving soldiers were arrested for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to terrorists, while hundreds of individuals were also identified as sponsors and financiers of terrorism. He stressed that such serious allegations should not end at arrest or identification without proper prosecution.

The senior lawyer argued that allowing the suspects to remain untried sends a wrong signal to the public and emboldens criminal networks, particularly at a time when the country is battling insurgency, banditry and other security challenges.

Falana noted that under Nigerian law, terrorism financing and collaboration with terrorist groups are grave offences that attract severe penalties, adding that the AGF has the constitutional responsibility to ensure that offenders are charged to court and tried without delay.

He further urged the Federal Government to demonstrate political will by ensuring transparency in the handling of terrorism-related cases, regardless of the status or influence of those involved.

Falana warned that selective justice or prolonged inaction could erode public confidence in the justice system and weaken national security efforts, insisting that accountability remains critical to winning the fight against terrorism.

He called on the AGF to provide the public with an update on the status of the cases and to take immediate steps to commence prosecution in line with the law.
