Abubakar Malami (SAN)

Prosecutors have outlined multiple counts in terror financing charges filed against a former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, alleging involvement in unlawful financial transactions linked to prohibited activities.

Court documents reveal that the charges include allegations of facilitating financial flows to entities suspected of terror-related operations, misuse of corporate accounts and failure to comply with anti-money laundering regulations. The prosecution claims the alleged offences occurred over a period spanning several years.

According to the charge sheet, investigators traced certain transactions to accounts allegedly connected to the defendants, raising red flags under Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention) Act and related financial laws. The case is being prosecuted by federal authorities as part of a broader clampdown on terror financing networks.

Legal representatives for Malami and his son have denied the allegations, insisting that the charges are unfounded and politically motivated. They said the defendants would challenge the evidence presented and prove their innocence in court.

The matter has been adjourned to allow for arraignment and further proceedings, with observers noting that the case could test the strength of Nigeria’s legal and financial intelligence frameworks.

Security analysts say successful prosecution of terror financing cases is crucial to disrupting extremist networks and strengthening national security. They stress, however, that due process and fair trial standards must be upheld.

The charges come at a time when Nigeria is under increased scrutiny by international partners to improve enforcement of anti-terror financing laws and financial transparency.
