Minister of Defence

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), has affirmed that military officers arrested in connection with the foiled coup plot last year are aware of the consequences of their actions and are prepared to face justice. Speaking to TRT World, a Turkish broadcaster, Musa emphasized that the accused will receive a fair trial and have access to legal counsel of their choice.

“The perpetrators already know the repercussions of their action, and I’m sure they are ready to face the wrath,” he stated, while also assuring that the government is looking after the families of those involved. “Their family members are not left alone. The government is making sure that their wives and children are looked after,” Musa said.

A total of 16 military officers, including a Brigadier-General and a Colonel, were arrested in October 2025 by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ). On January 26, 2026, the DHQ officially confirmed that a plot to oust President Bola Tinubu had been uncovered.

According to the military, intelligence from the Army, Department of State Services (DSS), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) revealed that the plot, discovered in late September 2025, involved plans to assassinate President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other senior government officials, as well as arrest top military leaders.

Gen. Musa noted that the accused were aware of the risks when they attempted the coup but reiterated that the government is committed to ensuring fairness while safeguarding the welfare of their families.

The government’s stance underscores a balance between national security and the rule of law, ensuring that justice will follow due process while innocent family members are protected from undue hardship.
