Taiwo Oyedele

The Senate has confirmed Taiwo Oyedele as a ministerial nominee of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following his screening on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday.

Oyedele, a tax policy expert and chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, received overwhelming support from lawmakers, who praised his experience in public finance and economic reforms.

During the screening, Oyedele assured the Senate that he would work to expand Nigeria’s revenue base, simplify the tax system and reduce the burden on small businesses if confirmed as minister.

He said Nigeria must improve tax collection efficiency rather than increase tax rates, stressing that millions of potential taxpayers remain outside the formal system.

Senate President said the nominee’s track record in fiscal reforms made him suitable to support the administration’s economic agenda.

Lawmakers also urged him to prioritise transparency, fairness and accountability in tax administration, noting that public confidence in government policies depends on trust.

President Tinubu had forwarded Oyedele’s name as part of efforts to strengthen the economic management team and accelerate reforms aimed at boosting government revenue and reducing reliance on borrowing.

Analysts believe Oyedele’s confirmation signals the administration’s commitment to restructuring Nigeria’s tax system, which has long been criticised as complex and inefficient.

The Presidency said the new minister is expected to play a key role in implementing ongoing fiscal reforms designed to stabilise the economy and attract investment.
