In a blistering critique of modern beauty standards and gender double standards, popular Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has pointed an accusing finger at men, labeling them the primary drivers behind the surge in cosmetic surgeries among Nigerian women.
The actress’s comments come in the wake of the tragic death of a young socialite, Elena Jessica, who reportedly died from complications following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure.
In a video that has since gone viral across Instagram and other social media platforms, a visibly passionate Nkechi Blessing did not hold back. She argued that the relentless pressure placed on women to possess perfect hourglass figures is a direct result of the body-shaming and unrealistic expectations championed by men.

According to the actress, women are often caught in a no-win situation. She highlighted the irony of a society where men publicly mock women for having natural bodies, referring to them with derogatory terms if they are too thin or too fat while privately gravitating toward women who have undergone surgical enhancement.
“Men are the ones pushing these women to go under the knife,” Blessing asserted. She explained that when a woman is natural, she is often ignored or ridiculed online, but the moment she fixes her body to suit the male gaze, she receives instant validation and attention. This cycle, she argues, creates a desperate environment where young women feel they must risk their lives to be considered attractive or valuable in the dating market.
Blessing, who is known for her outspoken nature and for flaunting her own natural curves, challenged men to be more honest about their roles in this epidemic. She noted that many men who criticize BBL procedures on social media are the same ones sliding into the DMs of women who have clearly had work done.
“If men stopped demanding these unnatural shapes and started appreciating women for who they are, the demand for these dangerous surgeries would drop,” she suggested. Her stance is that the life-threatening risks associated with BBLs are a tragic byproduct of a society that has commodified the female form to an extreme degree.
The death of Elena Jessica has served as a grim backdrop to this debate. As news of the socialite’s passing spread, many took to the internet to mock the deceased, a move Nkechi Blessing described as heartless. She urged the public to show empathy rather than vitriol, noting that the deceased was simply a victim of a system that tells women they are not enough in their natural state.
The actress also touched on the psychological toll of social media, where filtered images and body goals create a distorted reality. She encouraged women to find confidence within themselves, but maintained that until the culture of male-driven body-shaming ends, the trend of plastic surgery will continue to claim lives.
