President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the deployment of 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits across the country as part of efforts to reduce the cost of transportation and provide relief to Nigerians affected by high fuel prices.

The initiative, announced by the Presidency on Wednesday, is part of the government’s broader energy transition programme aimed at encouraging the use of cleaner and cheaper fuel alternatives.

According to officials, the kits will allow vehicles to run on CNG instead of petrol, significantly lowering transportation costs for commercial drivers and private car owners.

The government said the first phase of the programme will target mass transit operators, government fleets and commercial transport unions in major cities.

The Presidency explained that the move is expected to reduce dependence on petrol imports and ease pressure on foreign exchange.

Energy experts say CNG is cheaper and more environmentally friendly than petrol, but widespread adoption will depend on the availability of refuelling stations.

The government said it is working with private investors to expand CNG infrastructure nationwide.

Tinubu’s administration has been under pressure to provide relief after the removal of fuel subsidy led to sharp increases in transport fares and cost of living.

Officials said the CNG programme is one of several measures designed to cushion the economic impact of energy reforms.
