Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has described former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as a “fantastic man” but expressed doubts about his ability to unify Nigeria or assume the presidency.
In an interview on Thursday, Melaye praised Obi’s character and achievements but insisted that the timing is not right for his leadership at the nation’s helm. “But let me even tell you, Peter Obi is a fantastic Nigerian. I have tremendous respect for him, and I’ve said it before, he is a fantastic person, but this is not his time to be President,” he said.
Peter Obi has reiterated his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, positioning himself as a leading opposition figure. Melaye, who left the National Assembly and later contested the Kogi State gubernatorial election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was defeated by the incumbent governor, Ahmed Ododo.

Political analysts say Melaye’s comments reflect ongoing debates within opposition ranks over the viability of candidates capable of bridging Nigeria’s regional, ethnic, and political divides. While acknowledging Obi’s popularity and leadership qualities, Melaye stressed that a successful presidency requires broader national appeal and strategic timing.
Observers note that Obi remains a key figure in Nigerian politics, with significant grassroots support, but faces challenges in consolidating a coalition strong enough to win a general election. Melaye’s remarks are likely to spark conversations about the dynamics of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race and the readiness of opposition candidates to lead the country.
As political parties and aspirants begin preparations for the next election cycle, Melaye’s perspective highlights the importance of both personal qualities and national strategy in determining electoral success in Nigeria.
