Bola Ahmed Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy, Rule of Law

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria, assuring political leaders that these principles will remain central to his leadership.

The President gave the assurance on Wednesday during an inter-faith breaking of the fast with members of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress and leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Speaking at the gathering, Tinubu stressed that democracy remains the foundation for national unity, stability, and sustainable governance. He noted that his administration is determined to protect democratic institutions and ensure that the rule of law guides political and national affairs.

According to the President, strengthening internal democracy within political parties is critical to building credible electoral institutions and transparent political processes. He said political parties must allow members to participate fully in determining their representatives at different levels of government.

Tinubu pointed out that mechanisms such as direct primaries provide party members with broader opportunities to choose their candidates and deepen democratic participation.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey over the past 26 years, the President described himself as a committed democrat who had endured challenges in the struggle for democratic governance. He recalled the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, including protests, detentions, and exile during the military era.

Tinubu said he remains devoted to a united Nigeria and believes that democracy must protect both majority and minority interests.

“The rule of law must prevail in any democracy. The majority will have their way while the minority will also have their say,” the President said, adding that his administration would never undermine democratic rights.

He also assured political stakeholders of his commitment to free and fair elections, stressing that he understands the importance of respecting democratic processes regardless of political outcomes.

Earlier, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, commended the President for what he described as strong leadership in managing Nigeria’s diverse population and resources.

Yilwatda thanked the President for bringing together leaders of different political parties for the Ramadan gathering and pledged the ruling party’s continued support for the administration’s national development agenda.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Dantalle, appealed to the President to reconsider making the National Identity Number a compulsory requirement for voter registration under the 2026 Electoral Law.

Dantalle warned that the policy could disenfranchise many eligible voters. He also urged the government to restore financial support previously provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission to political parties.

He further informed the President about a documentary titled “Unbroken Democracy,” produced to mark 26 years of democratic governance in Nigeria. The film, supported by Hope Uzodimma, is expected to premiere soon at the Presidential Villa.
