President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family of former Nigerian international Henry Nwosu following the passing of the legendary midfielder at the age of 62.
In a statement issued by the President during the weekend, the president joined the Nigerian football community in mourning the death of the celebrated playmaker, whose skill and creativity on the field made him one of the most memorable figures in the country’s football history.
Tinubu described Nwosu as an exceptionally gifted footballer whose artistry and dedication to the game brought pride and joy to Nigeria during his playing career.
The president recalled Nwosu’s remarkable rise in Nigerian football, particularly his role as a 17-year-old member of the Nigeria national football team, then known as the Green Eagles, that won the historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations title.

According to Tinubu, Nwosu’s performance in that tournament and his creativity in midfield helped secure a memorable victory for Nigeria and cemented his place in the country’s football folklore.
The president also acknowledged the late footballer’s more than a decade of service to the national team, during which he represented Nigeria in several continental tournaments, including the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations, 1984 Africa Cup of Nations and 1988 Africa Cup of Nations.
Tinubu noted that beyond his exploits on the pitch, Nwosu also contributed to the development of football in Nigeria and inspired many young athletes to pursue excellence in sports.
He said Nigerians would always remember the former midfielder for the excitement and pride he brought to the nation through his talent and commitment to the game.
The president prayed for the peaceful repose of Nwosu’s soul and asked God to grant comfort and strength to his family, friends and the entire Nigerian football community during this period of grief.
Henry Nwosu is widely regarded as one of the most talented midfielders Nigeria has produced, with a career that left a lasting impact on the country’s football legacy.
