Nigerian Army, militants

At least 45 suspected militants have been killed during a large-scale military operation in Katsina State as Nigerian troops intensified security operations aimed at dismantling armed groups operating in the region.

Military authorities said the operation targeted several hideouts believed to be used by armed bandits and militant groups responsible for attacks on rural communities, kidnappings and cattle rustling across parts of the North-West.

According to security sources, troops launched coordinated ground and aerial assaults after receiving intelligence about the movement and concentration of armed fighters in remote forest locations.

The operation reportedly led to intense clashes between soldiers and the militants, resulting in heavy casualties among the armed groups. Several weapons, motorcycles and other logistics used by the fighters were also recovered during the raid.

Military officials described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to restore stability in areas that have experienced persistent security challenges in recent years. Katsina and neighboring states have witnessed repeated attacks by bandit groups who operate from forest camps and frequently target villages and travelers.

Security analysts say coordinated military offensives have become a central strategy in weakening such groups by disrupting their bases and cutting off their mobility networks.

Local authorities confirmed that communities near the operation area were informed in advance to reduce civilian risks during the security sweep.

Residents in some affected areas have expressed cautious optimism, saying sustained military presence could help restore normal activities and encourage displaced villagers to return to their homes.

However, experts warn that long-term security requires not only military action but also improved intelligence sharing, local policing and socio-economic interventions that address the conditions enabling armed groups to recruit fighters.

The military has reiterated its commitment to continuing operations until criminal networks operating in the region are significantly degraded.
