Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen’s first-half header proved to be the decider as Galatasaray edged past Besiktas 1-0 in a fiercely contested Istanbul derby on Saturday.

The match carried an extra layer of significance for Nigerian fans, as it pitted the Super Eagles’ vice-captain, Victor Osimhen, against the national team skipper, Wilfred Ndidi, in a high-stakes top-of-the-table clash.

The victory effectively shattered Besiktas’ impressive 18-match unbeaten streak and extended Galatasaray’s lead at the top of the Turkish Super Lig to seven points.

Osimhen, whose scintillating form has continued since making his move to Galatasaray permanent last summer, broke the deadlock in the 39th minute.

Meeting a precise cross from Leroy Sane, the 27-year-old Nigerian striker executed a brilliant diving header to score his 11th league goal of the season.

The match-winning goal also marked a significant personal milestone for Osimhen, extending his goal contribution streak to eight consecutive league appearances.

This impressive run, which includes eight goals and four assists, equals the longest such sequence of his professional career, a feat he previously achieved during his prolific spell with Napoli between January and February 2023.

Across all competitions this season, Osimhen boasts a remarkable tally of 18 goals and six assists in 26 appearances for the Istanbul giants.

Galatasaray’s path to victory was complicated in the 62nd minute when Leroy Sane was shown a red card, reducing the visitors to 10 men and inviting relentless pressure from Besiktas.

At the center of Besiktas’ push for an equalizer was Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, who put on a commanding performance in the midfield.

Ndidi recorded two tackles, four clearances, and an 85 percent pass completion rate in what was described as a grueling, physical encounter.

The midfielder nearly leveled the scoreline in the 72nd minute, unleashing a powerful long-range effort that forced Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir into a full-stretch save.

Cakir remained outstanding throughout the second half, repeatedly denying Besiktas as they created a flurry of chances. Galatasaray ultimately held firm to secure all three points.

With the victory, Galatasaray now sits atop the Turkish Super Lig with 61 points from 25 matches, seven points clear of second-placed Fenerbahce, who have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, the defeat deals a significant blow to fourth-placed Besiktas and their European qualification ambitions.

Galatasaray now turns its attention to the continent, preparing for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie at home against Liverpool.
