Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger commitment to the empowerment of women and girls, saying their advancement is critical to national development and social progress.

In a message to commemorate the International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, the First Lady joined millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the resilience, courage, and achievements of women across the country and around the world.

She noted the 2026 theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” underscores the urgent need to strengthen policies and actions that promote equality and ensure that women have access to opportunities that will enable them thrive.

According to her, empowering women should not be viewed as charity but as a strategic investment that benefits society as a whole.

“When we give women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice and equity, we gain stronger families, more prosperous communities and a more inclusive nation,” she said.

The First Lady stressed that the contributions of women remain vital to Nigeria’s development, noting that the country’s progress is closely tied to how well it supports the rights and aspirations of women and girls.

She encouraged Nigerians to continue promoting gender inclusion and to support initiatives that create opportunities for women in leadership, business, education, and governance.

Tinubu further emphasised that collective efforts are required from government, institutions, communities, and individuals to ensure that women and girls enjoy equal rights and protection under the law.
