Health authorities have confirmed new cases of polio in Zamfara State, raising concerns among public health officials about the resurgence of the virus in parts of northern Nigeria.

Officials from the World Health Organization and Nigeria’s health authorities said the cases were detected during routine disease surveillance and laboratory testing. The affected children are currently receiving medical care while health workers intensify vaccination campaigns in the region.

Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that primarily affects young children and can cause permanent paralysis in severe cases. Although Nigeria was declared free of wild poliovirus in 2020, outbreaks of vaccine-derived strains have continued to occur in some communities with low immunisation coverage.

Health experts say the latest cases highlight persistent challenges such as poor access to healthcare services, insecurity and vaccine hesitancy in certain areas.

Emergency response teams have been deployed to affected communities in Zamfara to conduct house-to-house immunisation campaigns aimed at preventing further spread of the virus. Surveillance efforts have also been intensified in neighbouring states.

Authorities are urging parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive routine vaccinations, stressing that immunisation remains the most effective way to prevent the disease.

Community leaders and religious organisations have also been engaged to support awareness campaigns and encourage participation in vaccination programmes.

Public health specialists warn that failure to maintain high vaccination coverage could allow the virus to circulate and threaten progress made over the past decade in combating the disease.

Nigeria remains a key focus of global polio eradication efforts due to its large population and history of outbreaks. Health authorities say coordinated action involving government agencies, international partners and local communities will be essential to contain the new cases.

Officials have reassured the public that with sustained vaccination efforts and improved surveillance, the outbreak can be controlled and the country’s polio-free status protected.
