Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is on the verge of another historic milestone after netting his 899th career goal to help Inter Miami secure a 2-1 victory over DC United on Saturday.

Playing at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) champions claimed their second win of the season, moving them up to third place in the Eastern Conference standings with six points from three matches.

The victory came just days after the Inter Miami squad attended a White House reception hosted by US President Donald Trump to celebrate their 2025 MLS Cup triumph.

Miami opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Messi’s Argentine compatriot, Rodrigo De Paul, unleashed a superb curling shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Ten minutes later, Messi doubled the lead. Latching onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Mateo Silvetti, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner executed a delicate first-time chip over advancing DC United goalkeeper Sean Johnson in the 27th minute. This marked his third goal of the current MLS campaign, following his brace in last week’s Florida derby win against Orlando City.

The goal takes the 38-year-old superstar’s career tally to 899, leaving him just one strike away from the monumental 900-goal mark.

His legendary scoring record now includes 672 goals for Barcelona, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain, 80 for Inter Miami, and 115 on the international stage for Argentina.

DC United mounted a strong response in the second half, finding a lifeline when Israeli forward Tai Baribo found the back of the net in the 75th minute.

However, Inter Miami’s defense held firm in the closing stages to weather the late surge and seal the 2-1 victory.
