Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has further consolidated its political dominance across the country, now controlling governments in 32 of the nation’s 36 states following a series of defections, court rulings and electoral victories.
The latest shift in the political landscape emerged after opposition figures in several states defected to the APC, citing internal crises within rival parties and the need to align with the federal government for development benefits. Political analysts say the growing influence of the ruling party has reshaped Nigeria’s political map ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which once governed a majority of states, has seen its influence shrink significantly in recent years. Party insiders attribute the decline to prolonged leadership disputes and factional divisions in several state chapters.
Governors who recently joined the APC said their decision was driven by the need to collaborate more effectively with the federal government to deliver infrastructure, security and economic projects to their states. Some lawmakers at both state and federal levels have also followed suit, strengthening the ruling party’s legislative base.

Political observers note that the expansion of the APC’s control may give it a strategic advantage in national policymaking and resource allocation. With governors wielding significant influence in Nigerian politics, the ruling party’s strong presence across the states could shape political alignments in the coming years.
However, critics warn that the dominance of a single party across most states could weaken democratic competition and accountability. Civil society groups have called for stronger institutions to ensure that opposition voices remain relevant in governance.
Meanwhile, opposition parties are exploring coalition strategies to challenge the ruling party’s expanding influence. Several PDP leaders have begun consultations with smaller political parties and influential stakeholders to rebuild support ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Political analysts believe the coming months will be critical in determining whether the APC’s growing dominance will translate into long-term stability or provoke renewed efforts by opposition forces to reorganise and regain political ground across the country.
