Former Senate President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has dismissed rumours suggesting he is planning to defect from the PDP, describing the claims as false and misleading.
Wabara addressed the speculation amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2026 political season, which has seen several high-profile figures switch party allegiances. He insisted that he remains firmly rooted in the PDP and has no intention of leaving the party he helped build.
In a statement released on Thursday, Wabara said the rumours were the handiwork of political mischief-makers seeking to create confusion within the opposition. He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the PDP and supporting efforts aimed at repositioning the party for future electoral contests.
The elder statesman emphasized that internal disagreements should not be misinterpreted as signs of defection, noting that healthy debate is part of democratic party politics. He urged party members to remain focused on unity rather than distractions fueled by speculation.
Wabara also used the opportunity to call on PDP leaders at all levels to close ranks and work towards rebuilding public trust. According to him, Nigerians are more interested in credible alternatives and solutions to national challenges than in rumours of political defections.
Political analysts say the clarification was necessary, especially as Wabara’s position as BoT chairman gives symbolic weight to any perceived shift in loyalty. His reassurance, they argue, helps calm nerves within the party at a time when stability is crucial.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Wabara’s statement signals continuity rather than rupture, reinforcing his role as a stabilizing figure within the PDP’s leadership structure.
