President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday paid a glowing tribute to elder statesman and former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marked his 87th birthday, describing him as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic evolution and a key architect of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued on January 16, 2026, Tinubu lauded Akande’s lifelong commitment to public service, progressive politics and good governance, noting that his contributions were instrumental to the growth of democracy and the historic rise of the APC to power in 2015.
The President recalled that Chief Akande, who was the first interim national chairman of the APC, laid the foundation for the political coalition that unseated an incumbent federal government for the first time in Nigeria’s history. According to Tinubu, Akande’s leadership, integrity and organisational discipline helped to institutionalise the party and strengthen the progressive movement.
“Baba Akande has contributed a lot to the growth and development of this country and to the emergence and institutionalisation of democracy in the land,” the President said, describing him as a mentor, leader and moral compass in Nigerian politics.
Tinubu traced Akande’s political journey to his early grounding in the ideology of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, noting that he began his professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum before venturing into public service. He went on to serve as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and later Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.
The President commended Akande’s consistency in public life, saying his record of honesty, uprightness and belief in democratic values had earned him respect across party lines. He added that Akande remained a strong advocate for democracy, social justice and good governance, even at 87.
Tinubu also acknowledged Akande’s personal role in his political journey, expressing gratitude for his advice, encouragement and steadfast support, which he said were crucial to his emergence as president.
“Having Baba Akande in my corner as a partner and ally has proved tremendously helpful,” Tinubu stated, adding that Akande’s continued backing of the administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda was deeply appreciated.
As the elder statesman marked his birthday, the President prayed for his continued good health and renewed strength, urging Nigerians, particularly members of the progressive family, to celebrate a leader whose life exemplifies service, sacrifice and enduring commitment to the nation.
