The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a man in connection with an alleged acid attack on a 17-year-old boy in Yola, the state capital.

Police authorities confirmed on Thursday that the suspect, identified as Idris Hamza, is currently in custody while investigations continue into the incident, which occurred in the Shagari area of Yola South Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, the incident was reported on January 14, 2026, when the victim, identified as Walid Kassim Mohammed, ran into the Shagari Police Division in visible distress. The teenager reportedly told officers that he was attacked while on his way to the mosque.

“On the 14/01/2026, the victim, a 17-year-old youth, reported that while heading to the mosque, he was sprayed with a substance suspected to be acidic by one Idris Hamza, a resident of Shagari, Yola South LGA,” the statement said.

Police said the victim sustained injuries from the attack and was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention. As of the time of the report, he was said to be responding to treatment, though the extent of his injuries was not disclosed.

Following the report, the police said the suspect was promptly taken into protective custody to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order in the community and to allow for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, CP Dankombo Morris, has since ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to take over the case. According to the police, the directive is aimed at ensuring a comprehensive and professional investigation, including forensic analysis of the substance allegedly used in the attack.

Nguroje stated that the police command is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, given the dangerous nature of acid attacks and their long-term physical and psychological impact on victims.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed the SCID to carry out a detailed investigation to establish the facts of the case and ensure that justice is served,” the statement added.

The police assured members of the public that anyone found culpable at the end of the investigation would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The command also urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing the importance of reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.

Acid attacks, though rare, are considered among the most brutal forms of violence due to the severe injuries they inflict. The Adamawa State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and promised to provide updates as investigations progress.
