Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he would only consider defecting to another political party if offered either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket, amid ongoing realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso made the position clear while responding to growing speculation over his political future and reports linking him with possible moves away from his current platform. He said any decision to defect must be based on clear terms that reflect his political stature, support base and years of experience in national politics.

According to him, he is not interested in joining any party merely for symbolic relevance or secondary roles, stressing that discussions about his defection should be realistic and respectful of his political influence. He noted that millions of supporters across the country identify with the Kwankwasiyya ideology and expect purposeful leadership decisions.

Kwankwaso, a former Minister of Defence and two-time governor of Kano State, said Nigeria’s challenges require strong leadership at the highest level, adding that any alliance he enters must be capable of addressing insecurity, economic hardship and governance failures.

He also cautioned against misinformation and political propaganda, urging Nigerians to rely on verified statements rather than speculation circulating on social and traditional media. He said consultations with allies and supporters remain ongoing, but no final decision has been taken on his next political move.

The former presidential candidate’s remarks come as opposition parties intensify negotiations and strategic talks aimed at forming alliances capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027. Analysts say Kwankwaso’s position could significantly influence the balance of power, particularly in the North.

As political maneuvering gathers pace, Kwankwaso’s declaration underscores the high-stakes calculations shaping early preparations for the 2027 elections and the central role key political figures are expected to play in the evolving landscape.
