D’Tigers

Nigeria’s national basketball team, the D’Tigers, has slipped to 53rd place in the latest FIBA world rankings, marking a setback after recent international competitions. The decline reflects mixed performances in qualifiers and regional tournaments over the past year.

FIBA officials attribute the drop to inconsistency in match outcomes and limited participation in high-ranking international games. “The rankings consider results from official competitions, and Nigeria’s absence or losses in some fixtures contributed to the decline,” a FIBA spokesperson explained.

Basketball enthusiasts and analysts have expressed concern, urging the Nigeria Basketball Federation to prioritize structured training, talent development, and international exposure. “We have talented players, but irregular participation and lack of sustained preparation affect our global standing,” said Coach Mike Brown, a former Nigerian league mentor.

Despite the setback, the D’Tigers remain optimistic about improving their ranking in upcoming tournaments, including the FIBA AfroBasket qualifiers and friendly international fixtures scheduled later this year.

The decline serves as a reminder of the competitive nature of global basketball and the need for strategic planning to maintain Nigeria’s position among Africa’s top teams.
